Brandon Truter Takes Charge As Chippa United Fight To Avoid Playoffs

Brandon Truter has been appointed as Chippa United head coach ahead of the club’s final Betway Premiership match of the season, with the Chilli Boys needing a result to avoid the relegation playoffs.

Truter arrived in Gqeberha and was introduced to the players and technical staff, with the club wasting no time in getting him settled before a crucial weekend fixture.

A Big Task In A Short Time

Chippa United travel to Durban to face Kaizer Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. A win would secure their Premiership status without needing to rely on results from other teams.

The Eastern Cape club sits on 25 points, one place above the playoff spot. ORBIT College are just a point behind them, while Marumo Gallants are also in the mix on the same points as ORBIT. A single win by either side could push Chippa into 15th place and into the playoffs.

Truter attended training on Monday, addressing the squad for the first time after agreeing to take the job. He was expected to officially lead the session from Tuesday as the team prepared for the trip to Durban.

Assistant coach Hlanga Dikeni, who had been overseeing the team following the departure of the previous coach, will continue in his role as part of the technical setup.

Sixth Coach Of A Difficult Season

Truter becomes the sixth person to take charge of Chippa United this season, a figure that reflects just how turbulent the campaign has been for the club.

Sinethemba Badela started the season in the dugout, before Musa Nyatama took over. Belgian coach Luc Eymael followed, then came Vusumuzi Vilakazi, with Dikeni stepping in on a temporary basis before Truter’s arrival.

The club reportedly shifted Monday’s training session to the afternoon to accommodate Truter and his arrival into the setup, showing how urgently they wanted him involved.

Players were also informed that they will not go on a break immediately after the Chiefs game. The squad is expected to continue training under the new coach regardless of the result on Saturday.

Poor Form Adds To The Pressure

Chippa’s recent results have made the situation feel even more urgent. The team has won just once in their last ten or eleven Betway Premiership matches, a narrow 1-0 victory over Siwelele in April. Since then, they have picked up only two points from their last five games.

Their most recent league outing ended in a 2-0 defeat to Golden Arrows, a result that is said to have pushed the club into making this latest coaching change.

That kind of form, so close to the end of the season, leaves Truter with very little time to change things. But keeping the team organised and focused for one match may be all that is needed.

Who Is Brandon Truter?

Truter is an experienced coach who has worked at several clubs across South African football. He built his reputation at Moroka Swallows, where he guided the club back into the top flight. He has since taken charge at AmaZulu, Sekhukhune United, Richards Bay on two separate occasions, and Upington City.

He started his coaching career in the lower ranks in the Western Cape and first worked at professional level with Cape Town All Stars before moving up. He is known in football circles by the nickname “Brakkies.”

Reports suggest that Truter signed a deal that includes an option for him to stay at Chippa beyond Saturday’s match, meaning this could be more than just a one-game appointment depending on how things go.

One Game To Get It Right

Everything now comes down to Saturday. Chippa need to win against Kaizer Chiefs to make sure of their safety on their own terms. A draw or a defeat could be enough to drag them into the playoff zone, depending on what ORBIT College and Marumo Gallants do in their own final matches.

Truter steps into one of the most pressured short-term jobs in recent Betway Premiership memory. With very little preparation time and so much riding on a single result, the Chilli Boys need their new coach to get it right when it matters most.
