Matric Results 2024: South Africa Celebrates Record-Breaking 87.3% Pass Rate
Today marks a significant milestone for thousands of learners across South Africa as they eagerly await their Matric Results 2024. The Class of 2024 has achieved an impressive pass rate of 87.3%, an achievement that reflects their hard work and dedication. Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube officially announced the results on Monday evening, highlighting a 4.4% improvement from last year’s 82.9% pass rate. This is the highest pass rate since the dawn of democracy, surpassing the Class of 2022, which had a pass rate of 80.1%.
Nearly half of the candidates (47.8%) achieved a Bachelor’s pass, qualifying them to continue their studies at universities and higher education institutions. KwaZulu-Natal topped the list with 84,000 Bachelor passes, followed by Gauteng and the Eastern Cape with 66,000 and 45,000 respectively. In total, 319,000 distinctions were achieved, demonstrating the academic excellence of the Class of 2024.
However, the release of this year’s results has not been without controversy. A dispute over the publication of results between the Information Regulator and the Department of Basic Education, coupled with the disturbing revelation that some results were being sold online, has cast a shadow over the process. Despite these challenges, Umalusi, the body responsible for quality assurance in public and private schools, will deliver a final verdict on the integrity of the examinations later today.
With official results available from 14 January 2025, the 2024 Matriculation results not only offer a reflection of academic success, but also an opportunity to continue studying.
