The draw took place on Tuesday at the Egyptian Football Association headquarters in Cairo, bringing together 48 teams across 12 groups.

The 2027 tournament will make history as the first AFCON to be hosted by three nations at the same time: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

How the Draw Worked

The 48 competing teams were split into 12 groups of four. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the finals, which are scheduled to run from 19 June to 17 July 2027.

However, because Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are co-hosts, they have already secured their places at the tournament. In the groups containing those three nations, only one other team will advance.

High-profile African football figures conducted the draw, including Max Gradel, William Troost-Ekong, Essam El Hadary, and Tresor Mputu.

Key Groups to Watch

Group A sees title holders Morocco placed alongside Gabon, Niger, and Lesotho. On paper, Morocco start as strong favourites to advance.

Group B gives Egypt a pair of away trips to Southern Africa, with Angola, Malawi, and South Sudan as their opponents.

Group C is packed with West African talent. Cote d’Ivoire, winners of the 2023 edition, are joined by Ghana, The Gambia, and Somalia.

Group D has an interesting storyline: Kenya coach Benni McCarthy will face South Africa, the country where he holds the all-time international scoring record with 31 goals. Guinea and Eritrea complete the group.

Group E features DR Congo against Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe.

Group F could produce a close race, with Burkina Faso, Benin, Mauritania, and the Central African Republic all capable of making things difficult for each other.

Group G has Cameroon looking to bounce back after missing the 2026 World Cup. They face Comoros, Namibia, and Congo.

Group H places Uganda alongside Tunisia, Libya, and Botswana.

Group I brings together Algeria, Zambia, Togo, and Burundi.

Group J has Senegal in a pool with Mozambique, Sudan, and Ethiopia.

Group K features Mali, Cape Verde, Rwanda, and Liberia.

Group L sees Nigeria joined by Madagascar, Tanzania, and Guinea-Bissau.

Full AFCON 2027 Qualifiers Group Draw

Group A: Morocco, Gabon, Niger, Lesotho

Group B: Egypt, Angola, Malawi, South Sudan

Group C: Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, The Gambia, Somalia

Group D: South Africa, Guinea, Kenya, Eritrea

Group E: DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe

Group F: Burkina Faso, Benin, Mauritania, Central African Republic

Group G: Cameroon, Comoros, Namibia, Congo

Group H: Tunisia, Uganda, Libya, Botswana

Group I: Algeria, Zambia, Togo, Burundi

Group J: Senegal, Mozambique, Sudan, Ethiopia

Group K: Mali, Cape Verde, Rwanda, Liberia

Group L: Nigeria, Madagascar, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau

Qualifier Fixture Windows

The qualifiers will be played across three international windows:

Matchdays 1 and 2: 21 September to 6 October 2025

Matchdays 3 and 4: 9 to 17 November 2025

Matchdays 5 and 6: 22 to 30 March 2027

The Road to AFCON 2027

With the groups now confirmed, national teams across Africa know exactly what stands between them and a place at the finals.
